Why You Can't Relax

Core Premise

Chase explains why your body treats relaxation as unsafe when staying on guard has kept you alive.

The emotional credit card

My one takeaway

“We don't hold onto the memory itself—we hold onto the feeling, like swiping an emotional credit card we can't afford.”

When I finished this, I was confused, a little pissed, and relieved all at once. It boiled down to this: we don't hold onto the memory itself—we hold onto the feeling, like swiping an emotional credit card we can't afford. You end up just paying interest, watching your body recruit every system to stay on guard until you're drained. I spent years trying to brute-force kill my ego, but the real work was recognizing the payments, calling out the fake stories my brain was making up, and deciding the debt is finally paid.

Speak to Yourself Correctly

Original episode links

Core Premise

The words you use with yourself shape what you notice and how you act. Change the script, and behavior follows.

The hate card

My one takeaway

“The way that you speak to yourself is typically how you speak to another person. Having compassion is the key.”

The way that you speak to yourself is typically how you speak to another person. If you are continually talking to yourself with demeaning words, then you will pick that out in everyone. That's what kills our compassion. It kills our connection. It kills everything that we have strived for as human beings: to be connected to another. When people say that they are separate, that is crap, because we are all connected, and having compassion is the key. However, taking compassion into sympathy is not the best thing to do. When you feel sympathetic for another or yourself, you just bring more reasons for you to feel that way. If another person walks in and you are judging them, lining them with the same labels you line yourself with, that's what keeps you separate. That is what keeps you on the hate card. And it shapes everything.

I'm Begging You to Start Journaling

Core Premise

David Bayer talks about looking at what you write and actually deciding what to do with it.

The 1-page dissolve ritual

My one takeaway

“Journaling in your head or endlessly rehashing just racks up emotional interest. Write out the one thing keeping you up, then dissolve the page.”

I've always journaled in some way, but often I'd just do it in my head—scratch it and swallow it. Paired with what Chase Hughes broke down about why we can't relax, I realized that kind of journaling was actually causing me more stress, pulling me deeper into emotional debt, and draining me. David Bayer talks about looking at what you write and actually deciding what to do with it. So before bed, I take the single thing that bothered me that day—the one thing you usually fall asleep chewing on. On one front page of lined paper, I write what happened, what I did, and what could have been done differently. Then I either tear it up or wet it down until the ink entangles and bleeds together, and throw it out. It dissolves the energy and releases the debt. When I wake up, yesterday's faults don't bleed into today's news. As Neville Goddard made clear: when you change how you feel when looking at something, what you're looking at changes too.
